Pre-K Literacy Standards 2016- 2017

By the end of the school year, students should be able to do the following with guidance and support from the teacher:

Reading Standards for Literature

  1. Ask and answer questions about print materials
  2. Retell familiar stories
  3. Identify common objects in illustrations in books
  4. Exhibit curiosity and interest in print that conveys meaning
  5. Experience common types of books
  6. Identify terms “author” and “illustrator”
  7. Make connection between self and/or real life situations and books
  8. Recall sequence of events of familiar stories
  9. Actively engage in a variety of shared reading experiences within various learning centres

Reading Standards for Informational Text

  1. Answer questions about print material
  2. Identify the main topic/idea and express some detail through play
  3. Identify the connections between self and events in printed materials
  4. Exhibit curiosity about words in a variety of context
  5. Identify how books are read and identify front cover, back cover and title page
  6. Identify terms “author” and “illustrator”
  7. Make connection between self and/or real life situations and books
  8.  Actively engage in a variety of shared reading experiences within various learning centres

Reading Standards: Foundational Skills

  1.  Recognize that spoken words can be written and convey meaning
  2. Recognize and name some letters in their first name
  3. Recognize some numbers
  4.  Recognize that print moves from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page
  5. Engage in language/verbal play
  6. Explore and recognize rhyming words
  7. Recognize environmental sounds
  8. Recognize sound patterns and repeat them
  9. Recognize first name in some environmental print
  10.  Display emergent reading behaviour by pretend reading and picture reading

Writing Standards

  1. Explore and experiment with a combination of written representations to represent stories, experiences or ideas
  2. Begin to experiment with a wide variety of fine motor materials and to hold age appropriate writing instruments to develop hand-eye coordination

Speaking and Listening Standards

  1. Participate in social conversations in a variety of settings
  2. Demonstrate understanding of information by asking and answering questions and following directions
  3. Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information or clarify something that is not understood
  4. Describe familiar people, places, things and events
  5. Demonstrate an emergent ability to express thoughts, feelings and needs clearly

Language Standards

  1.  Ask and answer questions
  2. Use simple prepositions
  3.  Use proper words instead of slang
  4. Demonstrate developing vocabulary with the majority of words spoken being understood by adults and peers
  5. Explore word relationships and word meanings by sorting common objects into categories to gain a sense of concepts that categories represent
  6. Use words and phrases acquired
