Last week, we learned lots about our bunny friends and enjoyed spending time playing with them and taking care of them. We learned all sorts of information about rabbits and how our behaviour, as humans, impacts them. Students demonstrated responsibility for Carrot and Lettuce every day when we fed them, gave them fresh water, played with them, allowed them to have quiet time, and even when we cleaned up after them. We even reflected and wrote down all our knowledge to share with the next class the bunnies will visit. We will miss our bunny friends, but are very excited to meet our new class pets, the birds.
What’s Happening In Our Class This Week
This week, we will be learning with our new class pets: Ruby and Dory. These lovely Budgies will help us to continue learning about the properties of living things and how human behaviour impacts them. We will explore if what we learned about rabbits transfers to what we do with birds. Students will learn to be responsible for birds and what needs they have. We will keep inquiring into how human behaviour impacts living things and what this means when we have pets.
At Home Connections
Discussions about different animals and what they need to be happy are a great way for kids to understand that animals have rights, just as humans, and that we need to treat them with respect and empathy. Often, animals are not considered as feeling, loving beings. We want our students to grow up knowing and believing that animals need to be treated well and that we, as humans, play a big role in their lives. Conversations lead to action. By helping our young learners to understand and care for animals, we hope to help them grow up to be compassionate caretakers who are committed to making the world a better place for all living things.
